the urge to declassify celebrities

In a world where celebrities are constantly under the gun of both public attention and cameras, the boundaries of their personal lives often turn out to be blurred. Declassification of intimate details – be it orientation, relationships or other ambiguous moments of life – is becoming a daily practice of the media, which has already begun to be defended as the right to freedom of expression:
This process not only raises questions about morality and respect for privacy, but also leads to serious consequences for the stars themselves.

What price do they pay for their fame, and is there an ethical line that should not be crossed?
What price do they pay for their fame, and is there an ethical line that should not be crossed?
Private affair

Relationships are one of the most discussed topics in the press. However, fans love not only to watch the development of celebrity relationships, sometimes fans come up with rumors about the relationships that could never have been.

For example, the case with the members of the popular boys band One Direction. The friendship between the two band members Louis Tomlison and Harry Styles even inspired their fans to call the guys by the same name for two – Larry. Fans wrote romantic stories, and the press fueled interest with paparazzi shots and provocative interview questions.

However, the stars assert: “We are just friends, our relationship is exclusively platonic”. At first, the singers themselves said that it even made them laugh, but then the close attention of journalists and fans began to strain. Rumors became so intense, it started to affect the bond between the two. In the following years, Styles and Tomlinson grew apart. Today the bandmates rarely hang out outside of One Direction events. In 2017, Tomlinson spoke about how the conspiracy theories affected his friendship with Styles in the interview for The Sun. Tomlinson said: “It kind of happened naturally for me and Harry because a certain number of the fans drew up this conspiracy. It made everything, I think on both fences, a little bit more unapproachable”.
Fanfictions are some of the most important pieces of lore for fictional characters, but what happens when these characters aren't fictional. A popular subgenre within the fanfiction world is called "real-person fanfiction". In this case "Larry" is a plot of fan’s imagination, fans created this pairing and started to write stories about it. These stories that form huge realities are created, owned, and controlled by fans, leading to a wide array of creative and sometimes disturbing storylines. Controversy over the ethics of fanfiction gets even more intense when its subjects are celebrities. Fans have used the abilities to create and quickly share content about their favorite public figures into scenarios the fan may have fantasized about, but which may be taboo in real life and shocking to the actor or celebrity depicted. Fan creations sometimes can feature well-known actors or celebrities different horrible things, for example, being brutally raped or in scenarios involving underage sexual encounters. All of these raise the question of how much control a real but public person has over his or her image in fictional creations. That stories might be harmful to that person’s identity and reputation, as well as his mental health.

Relationships of Korean artists, called idols, are often a “game against the rules”. Even in adulthood, idols are often banned from relationships in order not to upset or even anger fans. Thus, this topic becomes the most desirable for journalists. There is even a special Korean website – Dispatch, where paparazzi spy on Korean celebrities and catch new couples. The press not only ignores the consequences that will arise as a result of the leakage of such information, moreover, journalists spread information about the relationship of idols, knowing what kind of reaction it will have.
However, not all idols manage to avoid fatal consequences. That was the case with idol and actress Solly. In September 2013 fans discovered about the romantic relationship between the singer and rapper Choiza, after the publication of paparazzi pictures by the press. Users attacked the couple with reproaches and insults. After that Solly began to speak publicly about cyberbullying, women's rights and the importance of mental health. Also she hosted an online bullying
program for a while. She even asked her agency SM Entertainment several times to take action and
punish online haters, but nothing has been done.
She had to deal with everything alone for a long
time, and at one terrible moment she gave up.
Solly's death was announced in 2019. The singer
suffered from depression for a long time,
and fans are sure that the cause of death
was years of brutal harassment.

In June 2014, news
broke that Baekhyun from
EXO and Taeyong from Girls'
Generation were dating. The
Korean press began to write
that the idols have been hiding
their relationship for many months.
This news was a big shock to fans
and caused a negative reaction from
them, some people even started a
petition to dismiss Baekhyun from the
EXO group. The idols had to declare their relationship publicly, as well as apologize
to the fans. This statement extinguished all the negativity, the petition was withdrawn, and the fans became loyal again.

Revolution
or (re)Violation?

With the advent of the sexual revolution and the removal of stigma from the topic of sexuality, media and fans began to be interested not only in the relationships of the stars, but also in the more intimate details of their lives.

One of the most high-profile and long-lasting attempts of outing (public disclosure of information about a person's belonging to the LGBT community without his consent) was media speculation about the transgenderism of American pop diva Lady Gaga. Almost no interview was complete without questions about her gender, and videos and articles with celebrity’s "revelations" gained millions of views. Adding fuel to the fire was the fact that the singer never refuted rumors and actively supported the LGBT community in her work, for which she was often criticized and censored. For example, in 2011 it became known that Malaysian radio had drowned out the words about sexual minorities in her song "Born This Way" with extraneous noises. In 2024, for the publication of the Variety, Lady Gaga nevertheless decided to comment on this situation in detail and explain her tactics. It seemed that I began to use the services of as many people as possible, who do not require management: “The reason I didn't answer the question was because I didn't feel like a victim of this lie, and I thought, what about a child who is accused of this, who might think that a public figure like me would be ashamed?”.

However, speculation on sexuality does not always play into the hands of a celebrity whose personal space has been violated by the press. This can happen, for example, due to a simple lack of experience: not everyone in their 20s is able to withstand a barrage of criticism and rumors for the sake of destigmatizing oppressed people.

One of the examples when celebrities felt pressure from journalists is the star of "Twilight" and the face of Dior Kristen Stewart. From the first appearances on the screens, the actress's personal life began to be closely monitored, even Donald Trump could not do without comments: he once wrote on Twitter: "She cheated on him like a dog...", speaking about the breakup with Robert Pattinson. Rumors about orientation accompanied the actress throughout her career, and although she was quite open and did not hide her preferences, journalists and fans still went overboard, wanting to know all the details: "For so long, I was like, 'Why are you trying to skewer me? Why are you trying to ruin my life? I’m a kid, and I don’t really know myself well enough yet'".

Pregnant silence
Celebrity pregnancies are an even more desirable topic for the press than celebrity relationships. Many stars have announced their pregnancy through the press. For example, Emily Ratajkowski, announced her pregnancy by appearing on the digital cover of Vogue magazine. However, not all celebrities want to tell the world such special news right away. Many people value privacy and want to spend this period without too much publicity. They can be understood, because according to statistics, up to 20% of pregnancies end up with miscarriage, and the extra attention causes extra stress. Unfortunately, the media don’t always respect this desire.

birth in 2022. The video acted as a catalyst for the rumor and started a chain reaction of content based around Zendaya's pregnancy. There also was a TikTok video Twitter, which featured a fake sonogram photo that was photoshopped to look as if Zendaya had posted it herself. It all ended up with a series of Twitter posts on the same topic. This case clearly shows what is happening with privacy in the era of social networks. The Internet is becoming a platform for discussing the personal lives of stars, where it can be done quickly and simply. Any user can record a provocative video that will go viral and bring quick popularity. Such videos do not require special equipment or preparation, but these 15-second videos launch a real rumor machine, as was in the case with Zendaya. Such videos are not moderated by the administrators of social networks, as it may seem that they do not carry any harm. However, these videos draw attention to the part of celebrities' lives that they would not have revealed

In many cases, publications fuel false information about celebrity pregnancies. For example in 2022 there was the case with the famous actress Zendaya. The rumor's origin is unknown, but it became popular from a TikTok video claiming that the actress will marry and give
themselves. However, the actress denied all the rumors, and in a post on social networks she added: “See now, this is why I stay off Twitter”.

Many celebrities who have been in a relationship for a long time at some point face questions about childbirth. Many people forget that some women cannot have children due to health reasons, and someone simply doesn’t have a desire to raise children. However, no one can avoid uncomfortable questions. Even when you're already pregnant and you don’t mind talking about it, your pregnancy can be questioned.
Pregnancy rumors also
haunted model Hailey Bieber,
who only recently became a
mother for the first time. In
2022, she appeared at the Grammy Awards in a loose Saint Laurent dress. This provoked pregnancy rumors, which were actively fueled by the press. Shortly before that, the model faced serious health problems, and who knows what stress these baseless conclusions added. Hailey reacted to them like this: “Everybody always assumes it's: first comes love, then comes marriage, then comes the baby. Well, what about all the things I want to accomplish in my business?”.
This was the case with
Beyoncé's first pregnancy.
Singer announced her pregnancy
during a performance at the MTV
Music Video Awards in 2011. But
shortly after that a strange rumor appeared: it was a surrogate mother
who was pregnant with Blue Ivy – and Beyonce was just pretending to be pregnant. Catalyst for this rumor was her TV interview in October 2011 which went viral when her bump appeared to fold in on itself, promptingspeculation that Beyonce was wearing prosthetics. However, a different camera angle revealed it was the fabric of her
dress that created the folding
illusion – but conspiracy theorists
and press ran and ran with it.
The issue of publicizing celebrities' personal information does not receive careful ethical and legal regulation, despite the existence of libel articles and codes of ethics for journalists around the world. It becomes clear that the formation of public opinion on the right to privacy is impossible without the intervention of media personalities themselves. Open discussions about the boundaries that stars are willing to cross can significantly reduce the amount of speculation.
True crimes?
At the mention of the words “crime” and “celebrity” in the same sentence, the name P. Diddy has been popping up in my head lately. The American producer is charged with several counts, including rape and human trafficking. A loud scandal is happening in America right now, affecting more and more media personalities and acquiring new details, the reliability of which is debatable. Disclosing details of crimes often becomes a real test for stars, affecting their personal lives and careers. Rumors and gossip can instantly destroy a reputation, regardless of their truthfulness.
An example is the recent
scandal surrounding Justin
Bieber and P. Diddy, when rumors surfaced about the alleged rape of an underage singer by a producer. Mass media in such situations acts as a catalyst, picking up and inflating any information. So, theories about the mental trauma inflicted on Diddy Bieber spread online, and as evidence, users used hints in clips, looks in videos from a decade ago and other controversial details. As a result, according to the publication The Music Essentials, received from an
"approximate person", "He's obviously
been very worried about this Diddy situation because it drags him into
the headlines in a very lurid
and upsetting way <...> He's
barely eating... you only have
to look at him to see that”.
In such conditions, stars face emotional pressure, which can lead to a decrease in professional activity and even depression. Rumors and gossip sometimes become more significant than real events, overshadowing the personality and creativity of artists. This underlines the importance of a responsible approach to the dissemination of information, so as not to disturb people's lives for the sake of sensationalism.

The fanatical tenacity with which Internet users fan rumors has reached the point where almost any American show business news is now associated with Diddy.

For example, the death of Liam Payne, the ex-lead singer of the band One Direction, which occurred on October 16 this year, was overgrown with theories of grieving fans, the most recent of which is that the rapper is involved in this tragedy. According to the results of a post–mortem examination, it turned out that "pink cocaine" was found in the singer's blood, a substance that was allegedly given to the victims of the rape of Pi Diddy. Now the headlines read: "In order not to tell the truth about P Diddy's parties, did they eliminate a popular singer?", "Did Pi Diddy kill Liam Payne? Everything you need to know about the new version in the case of the death of the lead singer of One Direction".

Fans believe that the reason for the murder could be Payne's intention to talk about pedophilia in Hollywood in an interview, and now the Network writes that this situation is a warning to anyone who wanted to speak out against Diddy. The release of details of celebrity deaths raises many ethical questions regarding respect for the individual, family tragedy, and public interest.

Secrecy regarding crimes and accusations against public figures is now becoming an ethical issue aimed not only at the accused themselves, but also at public peace in general. Defamation related to criminal cases is perceived by users much more sensitively, forcing them to form false ideas about entire associations of people and spreading false panic and distrust in society. To reduce the spread of such rumors, it is important to develop awareness of the legal consequences and form a responsible approach to publications. Public organizations and the media should actively work to create standards that will prevent the dissemination of unofficial information and support the legal protection of the accused, thereby contributing to a more respectful attitude towards the private life and reputation of celebrities.

People often neglect ethical standards for the sake of discussions and public attention. Who is responsible for the invasion of privacy – journalists or the audience? In the century of social media, the audience is almost equally responsible for spreading false information. Nowadays it's enough just to post a video with unreliable information and other users will spread these misconceptions. However, despite this, there is still more trust in the media and journalists than in bloggers and influencers. The information from journalists still seems to be more verified and accurate. Therefore, journalists and simple internet users need to respect ethical standards. Journalists need to remember that even the most famous person is still a person who has feelings that are quite easy to hurt. Press needs to talk about topics related to personal life more carefully in order to avoid scandals and bullying, which can lead to terrible consequences.
